Yahoo to kill public chats, voice calls in Messenger

Yahoo, one of the most renowned internet companies in the world, has announced it will close the public chats, Pingbox and voice calls to landline and mobile phones. The company has also decided to pull away its Yahoo Messenger from Microsoft's Windows Live.

This was announced via posts on YahooMessenger Blog as well as on Messenger Help sections in Yahoo Help.

In the blog post, Yahoo stated, "We're focused on building products that are beautiful and meaningful for our users. Sometimes, this means we have to make tough decisions — like closing down features that we feel aren't adding enough value for you. With this in mind, we have decided to discontinue several Yahoo! product features. This will enable us to refocus our efforts on modernising our core Yahoo! products experiences and of course, create new ones."

The company will shut down public chat rooms and Pingbox on Yahoo Messenger from December 14. It will become inoperable with Windows Live on the same day.

Yahoo's voice calling feature via Messenger, named Voice Phone In and Phone Out, will become inactive from January 30, 2013. Users can no longer add funds to their voice calling account and will be refunded the remaining balance in their accounts; instructions for the same will be sent by Jajah, the company that powers Yahoo's voice calls, later this month. However, the company will continue to support voice calls between two Yahoo Messenger accounts.

Free roaming likely from March 2013

After announcing plans to abolish roaming charges for mobile users when traveling within India from next year, the telecom department is likely to ask operators to implement this consumer-friendly move from March.  Mobile phone companies have opposed the government's plans to do away with roaming charges, which accounts for about 10% of their revenues, and have warned they would be forced to increase tariffs to offset this loss.  According to an internal DoT note (dated November 23) reviewed by ET, the department has listed this consumer-friendly move amongst 'key initiatives to be completed within the next three months'.  By March, the department also wants to expand the mobile number portability (MNP) provision and allow consumers to retain their numbers when they move to a new city or any location in the country without having to pay roaming charges. At present, MNP, the facility that allows customers to retain their number while switching operators,...
